What Flea Treatment Do You Use on Your Poodle?

Filed under: Everything Else — Scott @ 11:14 pm

When I took Gumbo to the vet the other day, I realized they are both in the 41-80 pound weight class so the dosage of their medicine is the same now. That was a relief.

What treatment do you use for your dog? Have you found it any cheaper than I show it below?

We use Revolution because it treats fleas, ticks and heart worms. Of course, before using this you need to make sure your dog does not have heart worms, see your vet for that. We have used the other brand that doesn’t cover the heart worms, but why have to keep up with two treatments if you don’t have to? Revolution seems to work fine on fleas. We are surrounded by trees on three sides in our back yard and we have yet to see a flea on either dog.

Save Money On Revolution:
After paying $94.80 for six months of Revolution at the vet’s office, I have just found it online for $58.99, that’s 37% less not including the tax savings of buying out of state online. A lesson learned. Check out Revolution at Entirely Pets. A six month supply is 61.99. Use coupon code OCT07OFF3 (expires October 31, 2007) to get an additional $3 off at checkout. That brings the price down to $58.99. I am not sure what your vet charges, but that is a significant savings over my vet’s price. We will need to get a prescription from the vet, but that is not a problem. Ground shipping is $4.95 and shipping is free over $100, so you can get a 12 month supply and lower the cost even more.

Bingo the Parti Poodle is Growing Up

Filed under: Everything Else — Scott @ 10:41 pm

My sister sent these photos of Bingo today. He is getting bigger. He has fun running around with his sister, Jazz, the black lab in the bottom photo. We still haven’t gotten over there to let Creole and Gumbo play with him and Jazz.

Brother # 6 is hanging with me this week!

Filed under: Meet the Family, Everything Else — Lahni Venable @ 6:19 pm

Hi, Gumbo and family!

This is Killee!  My parents talked to Ken and Leslie yesterday to make sure Maggie Moo made it to a good home.  As you know, she has.  However, that call changed my life!  While talking to Ken & Leslie, Ken mentioned they still had the final baby of the litter — Ricky — and were wondering if I needed a brother for company.  Well, they invited Mommy and me over for a little playtime [I even got to see Daddy Max and Belle (Weimeraner) again!]  Ricky came to my home to spend the night.  We’ve been playing and having fun all day today.

Mommy and Leslie spoke this afternoon, and they are  going to give Ricky a few more days to hang out with me.  If he gets to stay, Mommy and Daddy have suggested “Apollo” for his new name — isn’t that the coolest!?!  Achilles and Apollo — the Poodle warriors!

Gumbo, Ricky looks and acts just like all of us — red headed and good natured.  I’m having so much fun showing Apollo {I mean, Ricky} around our house and yard.  I keep telling him we’ve gotta continue to be good so Mommy and Daddy will let him stay.  I’ll let you know how this week goes.  Right now, we’re “raxing” on the floor while Mommy sends the email on the good news.

I’ll send pix of  Ricky aka Apollo after Daddy fires up the digi camera when he gets home.  Hey, when are you coming to Big D?  Can’t wait to meet you one day!

 Later, bro [paw slap!],

Killee

Do You Kennel Your Poodle?

Filed under: Everything Else — Scott @ 11:44 pm

I have had dogs in the past that I did not kennel train, but I must say that they got in a lot of unnecessary trouble. When we got Creole we got her a 42″ wire kennel and it became her bedroom and sanctuary.

Being that I work from home, it is needed for me sometimes to have time where I can concentrate and not have to worry about what the dogs might be getting in to. Most days we put them in their kennel for at least a few hours while one of both of us are home. They really don’t mind it.

What we never do is put them in their kennel as punishment. Their kennel is a happy, safe place for them and is not at all associated with doing something bad. I wish I had kennel trained previous dogs, like the Golden who ate my hat with autographs of the entire Atlanta Braves pitching staff from 1992. That was not a happy moment.

Creole and Gumbo really are fine with their time in the kennel. Of course when they are small puppies they will cry and whine when they are put in the kennel, but associate them going in the kennel for the last time at night with a small treat and they will literally run into their kennels every night at bedtime and whenever else you mention “kennel”. We only give them treats at night when they go in their kennels. We can’t give them too many treats.

Do you kennel your dog? What do you see as advantages or disadvantages of kennel training your dog? You can leave your comments below and no registration is required to comment.

Post Your Own Poodle Photos and Stories

Filed under: Everything Else — Scott @ 11:02 pm

We finally ironed out the kink that prohibited users from uploading their own photos. Now you can sign up here and make your own posts and upload photos of your pup. Please set the photos to 500 pixels wide so they don’t skew the alignment of the pages.

All you do is set up the account, post your photos using the “Upload” section below the box where you enter text, use the file browser to select the image on your computer, then click upload.

screenshot1.jpg

You can include titles if you want, but they are not required Once the photo is uploaded, click the “Send to Editor” button when the cursor is in the location where you want the image to appear, usually below the text.

screenshot2.jpg

You will magically see the image appear in the box where you have started your post. Then, while the image is selected, click on the “Insert/Edit Image” button in the toolbar atop the post box:

and set the width to 500. The width is the first box in the “Dimensions” section and you need not set the height. It will scale automatically to the 500 width so the photo does not get distorted.

Press “Publish” and you are done. Your pup is now out there for the world to see.

This post was made using this system and you can click on the images to see them in full size. These are the default settings on the check boxes you will see.

I feel like I should remind you that you are posting on a site that will be seen by many, so don’t post any more personal information than you might want any given stranger to see.

Two Bad Poodles

Filed under: Everything Else — Our People @ 10:45 am

I don’t have any kids, but I remember some days when I was a kid and all I seemed to do was get in trouble. Today is one of those days for these two poodles. We can’t really blame Gumbo, all he really does is follow Creole’s lead, but they both seem to have a mind of their own today and don’t listen to anything we tell them to or not to do.

Of course we still love them and no, we do not beat them (tempting as it might be sometimes). I guess it is just one of those days when they want to do what they want to do and nothing else. They are currently in time out and are amazingly quiet. They know they are in trouble. Maybe the second half of the day will be better.

Our First Weekend Together

Filed under: Everything Else — Our People @ 9:05 pm

We asked our people to make the first post to show us how. They have posted some video below that was taken on our first weekend together. We played, barked at each other, tumbled in the grass and generally had a great time. We love our people, Judi and Scott and we think they are pretty good, as people go.

Check out our videos. There will be more to come. Notice the shoe-stealing culprit at the beginning of the first video.
