Gumbo Goes to the Vet. He has a Broken Toe.
Last Sunday Gumbo was running around the yard with Creole. They were playing, wrestling and generally romping like they normally do when he came up limping.
We went to Dr. Bradshaw today and he has a broken toe. Dr. Bradshaw wrapped it and said Gumbo needs to have limited activity for the next few weeks until the toe heals. So, Gumbo is fine but he will be in his kennel most of the time for the next 4 weeks or so until his little toe is all better.
As I type this post, he is in his kennel ripping off the bandage, so we’ll see if he is able to keep it on. The vet said it is not necessary to keep the wrap on, but it will make the toe heal faster. We’ll see.
He weighs 42 pounds as of today and has not once let out a whine or a whimper about his toe. He is such a lovable dog that all he wants to do is be with us even if he is hurting. It is the inside toe on his front right foot. The vet said they put most weight on the two center toes when they run, which explains why he doesn’t always limp when he walks but usually does when he tries to run.
He’ll be fine I’m sure. He’ll just be confined for a while until it gets better. This has not affected his attitude at all. He is still the happiest and friendliest dog I have ever seen.

Gumbo, ouch! Bless you little guy with that bandage! Try to stay off of it as much as you can so it can heal faster and you can be back in the yard playing! Anyway, take care and hope to hear you’re romping around sooner than the doctor said you would. I’m sure your sister Creole will be doting on you — along with your Mommy, your Dad, your neighbors….Hey, at least your neighbor cat will get a rest for a couple of days without you to chase him! Get well soon.

Poor Gumbo! I’m sure that’s kind of inconvenient for him. I’m glad it’s not hurting too much!

He’s back. He is still wearing the wrap for a few more days, but he is back to his usual running and romping. It seems that the anti-inflamation/pain medication worked well.

Gumbo - So glad to hear you’re back. I knew you’d heal up fast! Be careful chasing Creole and the neighborhood cat! Hey, I’m trying to get my Mom and Dad to take a picture of my new backyard friend, Paris the Frogger. He comes out at night and let’s me sniff him — he doesn’t want to play much. Mom always tells me to leave Paris alone…….I’ll get a picture of him out here.
